Improving the quality of life while respecting the environment in which people live, through specific waste collection and sorting policies
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The action planned for the next three years at the Chake Chake District aims to implement a precise and defined policy of environmentally friendly waste collection and sorting, through targeted processes of education and sensitization of the local community in this area. The ultimate objective is the establishment of an integrated and sustainable municipal waste management system, as improper waste management constitutes not only a very serious health and hygiene deficit, but also contributes to the aggravation of the effects of climate change.
CONTEXT
The Government of Zanzibar has long since started ( beginning with the banning of plastic bags) a precise and defined policy of environmentally friendly waste collection and sorting, through targeted processes of education and sensitization of the local community in this area. Improper waste management constitutes not only a serious health and hygiene deficit, but also contributes to the worsening effects of climate change. In particular, this poor management pattern gives rise to abandoned waste heaps near urban centers or sources, causing serious health problems and contaminating natural resources such as water, air and soil. Despite the fact that the government has already commissioned the implementation of a national strategic plan (Solid Waste Management Strategy) in 2018, forecasts estimate an increase in waste generation in the urban area and rural area. These expectations reflect the low efficiency of the service, due not only to limited knowledge of this topic, but also and especially by the lack of financial sustainability
