The Public Health Laboratory Ivo de Carneri has the following principle objectives:
- to organize and make functional plans for the prevention, diagnosis and containment of endemic diseases;
- to facilitate local scientific research focused on new methods for the containment of these diseases;
- to begin training programs for local personnel.
Since its opening, the Public Health Laboratory-Ivo de Carneri has represented a resource for health on the Zanzibar Archipelago. It has been integrated into the local healthcare system, which the PHL-IdC reinforces and supports by coordinating efforts that are beneficial to the entire community, both on the level of emergencies and general control of diseases which are widely-diffused on the island.
It provides useful data to health authorities for the implementation of plans and programs for the betterment of the health of the community.
The results of the PHL-IdC’s past research, and that which will be conducted in the future, are made available to the global scientific community. It is a center for the collection and analysis of health data related to the Pemba Island population. The data is utilized to plan and organize targeted interventions that are based on the actual sanitary situation.
It is a training center for both local and international healthcare personnel. Education and continuous training are essential for the independence of the community, and for countering the effects of brain drain in impoverished areas.
